What is the difference between “plastic” and “cosmetic” surgery?

Plastic surgery is an umbrella term covering both cosmetic surgery and reconstructive surgery. Reconstructive procedures repair birth defects or deformities caused by injury or illness. Cosmetic procedures are those that are done electively to enhance one’s appearance. Sinno Center for Plastic Surgery has extensive experience in both cosmetic and reconstructive procedures.

What is a plastic surgeon and what kind of credentials should one have?

A plastic surgeon like Dr. Fady Sinno is a medical doctor who has completed a residency program in the plastic surgery specialty. This program comprises 2-3 years of intensive training in the full spectrum of reconstructive and cosmetic procedures, after a prerequisite training in surgery

You should absolutely check to make sure the physician you choose has the proper credentials:

1. Graduated from an accredited medical school
2. Completed 2-3 year plastic surgery residency program, after a prerequisite training in surgery.
3. Board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) NOTE: Board certification ensures that the doctor has met all of the preceding criteria and has practiced for two years and has passed rigorous exams about plastic surgery
4. Hospital privileges to perform the procedure you’re considering at a local, accredited hospital – requires the approval of a body of the physician’s peers
5. Many years of experience performing the procedure you are considering
6. Membership in the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS)
7. Be aware that some physicians claim certification by certain "boards" that are self-appointed and not members of the ABMS(American Board of Medical Specialties). The American Board of Plastic Surgery is a member of the ABMS and is the only one recognized to certify plastic surgeons.

The single most important factor in your decision to undergo plastic surgery is the physician. You should be very comfortable with his or her credentials, experience, and personality.

What should I ask at my consultation?

Your initial consultation is your opportunity to ease your mind about the physician and the procedure you are considering. It’s a good idea to brainstorm ahead of time and write down all the questions you can think of. During the consultation, you can then jot down notes about the answers.

You should plan to discuss:

• Why you are considering plastic surgery and what you hope to achieve
• The physician’s professional qualifications
• Financial details
• Risks
• Alternatives
• Additional procedures
• Results – how long they last, realistic expectations
