WHAT IS BREAST AUGMENTATION?
Breast augmentation, or breast enlargement, is a surgical procedure that will
enhance the size and shape of your breasts.
An implant is imbedded under the breast to increase its size. Breast implants
are made of a silicone shell filled either with silicone gel or a saline (a
salt water solution).
At Sinno Center for Plastic Surgery, we will provide you with detailed information
about regulations established by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for
use of implants. We follow these regulations.
WHEN SHOULD BREAST AUGMENTATION BE DONE?
Women generally choose breast augmentation surgery for one or more of these
reasons:
- To make breasts bigger; to balance their overall body figure with
a more proportioned breast size
- To correct a noticeable imbalance in breast size
- To reconstruct breast(s) after breast surgery
- To correct a reduction in breast size after pregnancy
- To fix breast sagging and smaller breasts by enlarging them

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR BREAST ENLARGEMENT?
Breast augmentation will enhance your appearance and your self-confidence.
The best candidate for a breast enlargement is a woman with realistic expectations
about the results of the procedure. You should not expect a dramatic change
in your appearance or in the way people regard you.
You should be in general good health for this procedure.

HOW IS BREAST AUGMENTATION DONE?
The operation is done at the Sinno Center
for Plastic Surgery on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia,
so you will sleep throughout the procedure. It takes 2-3 hours to
complete.
An incision is made in order to insert the implant. Dr. Sinno will decide the
best place to make the incision, depending on your anatomy. Every effort is
made to assure the incision is made so resulting scars will be as inconspicuous
as possible.
After making the incision, Dr. Sinno will lift your breast tissue and skin
to create a pocket. The pocket either will be directly behind your breast tissue
or beneath your chest wall muscle. In most cases, Dr Sinno will recommend implant
placement behind the chest muscle (shown on the right in the graphic). The pocket
is created meticulously for accurate positioning and coverage of the implant.
Absorbable sutures (stitches) are used to close the incisions internally and
tape is placed on the outside. A gauze bandage may be put over your breasts
to aid healing.
Local anesthesia (numbing medicine) is applied to the breast before the end
of the surgery, so you will be comfortable for hours after you wake up from
anesthesia.

HOW CAN YOU PREPARE FOR YOUR BREAST AUGMENTATION?
Initial consultation
You will have a comprehensive consultation with the staff at the Sinno Center
for Plastic Surgery that includes:
- Discussion of your goals and expectations. Dr. Sinno will ask you
how you want your breasts to look.
- Evaluation of the condition of your breasts. If your breasts are sagging,
Dr. Sinno may also recommend a breast lift.
- Review of various options to help you meet your desired goals
- Discussion of potential risks
- Outline of how the surgery is done, anesthesia used for the procedure
and what to expect
- Details about costs
- Answer any questions you have
Be ready to provide the following information:
- Complete medical history
- List of medications you take, including use of aspirin and other over
the counter medications, vitamins and herbal supplements
- Details about your tobacco and alcohol consumption
Before your surgery date:
- Live right. The best way to prepare your body for any surgical procedure
is to make healthy lifestyle choices in the weeks beforehand. If you prepare
your body for surgery, your “back-to-normal time” is often reduced.
- Exercise regularly.
- Get adequate sleep.
- Eat right.
- Take vitamin supplements.
- Reduce stress.
- Depend on someone. Arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery.
You may want to have someone to help you at home for the first day or two while
you recuperate.

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT WHEN YOU ARE HEALING?
The first two weeks after surgery . . .
- The first 24-48 hours after surgery you will feel tired and sore. Prescribed
pain medication will relieve much of your discomfort.
- You can shower or take a bath the day after surgery. Don’t let
the incision strips soak for more than 1-2 minutes.
- During the first week, try to sleep on your back instead of your side. This
helps keep the implants in the best possible position during healing.
- Any burning sensation in your nipples—not everyone experiences
it—should disappear within 7-14 days.
- Bruising will disappear in about two weeks.
- If you have any gauze dressings, they will be removed after a few days.
- Avoid heavy lifting and straining for at least 2 weeks.
- Allow the skin tapes (steristrips) over the incision to come off by
themselves within 2 weeks.
Wearing a bra . . .
After surgery, you must wear a specialized elastic bra or sports bra to help
hold your breasts in the correct position.
- Wear it at all times, even while sleeping, for the first two weeks.
- You can take the elastic bra off while you shower or take a bath. Put
it back on immediately after drying off.
- If the elastic bra is too tight, be sure to call
us at Sinno Center for Plastic Surgery. Pinching bras can cause skin problems.
- After two weeks you may sleep without the bra.
- You should not go braless except while sleeping—for 4-6 weeks
after the surgery.
- When you go back to wearing your own bras, you will probably be more
comfortable wearing a bra without an underwire while you are healing.
Getting back to normal . . .
- You should be able to return to work or school within a few days after
the surgery, depending on how physically strenuous your work load is
- Resume driving when you experience no pain turning the steering wheel—usually
within a week for power steering.
- You can do other light activities as tolerated
- Strenuous exercise can start in about 3 weeks after surgery
- Protect scars from sunlight for at least a year.
What you might notice . . .
- Your breasts may heal at different rates. One may swell, one may feel
less comfortable than the other, or the shapes may look different at first.
When fully recovered, your breasts will look very similar and natural.
- You may hear or feel a “sloshing” sensation after surgery.
This is not the implant! Sometimes fluid accumulates in the area around the
implant immediately after surgery. It will all be absorbed by your body within
a few weeks.
- The skin of your breasts may appear temporarily shiny due to swelling.
Within a few weeks, the swelling will disappear and the skin will return to
normal.
Diet and nutrition . . .
Good diet and nutrition will help your body heal better, and faster, after a
surgical procedure.
- Drink plenty of water or clear fluids; up to 64 ounces a day is recommended
- Eat fresh fruits and vegetables with every meal
- Eat small amounts of protein with every meal
- Eat every 4-5 hours; do not wait longer to eat
- Eat more frequent meals, with fewer calories per meal
- Eat breakfast within an hour after you get up
- Use vitamin supplements, especially antioxidants, to promote healing
and renew energy

HOW LONG WILL RESULTS LAST?
Results of your breast augmentation are permanent. Keep in mind that as your
body and skin continues to age, your breasts may show some natural sagging.

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OR RISKS?
All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. The specific risks and the
suitability of this procedure for you can only be determined during your consultation
with Dr. Sinno prior to performing the procedure.
You can reduce chance of risk by closely following instructions before and
after the procedure that are provided by Sinno Center for Plastic Surgery.
Capsular Contracture
This condition occurs if the scar tissue around the implant begins to tighten
or contract. This squeezes the soft implant, causing your breast to feel hard.
The contracting can happen immediately after surgery or years later in one or
both breasts; there is no way to predict it.
If this condition occurs, it can be anywhere from very mild and barely noticeable,
to severe enough to produce discomfort, pain or distortion of the shape of your
breast. Sometimes surgery is necessary to treat it.
Infection
A very small number of women get an infection around the implant. This can occur
at any time, but usually it happens within a week or so after surgery. Sometimes,
the implant must be removed, and then a new one reinserted several months later
when the infection clears up.
Changes in sensation
You may find that your nipples become either overly sensitive or they have decreased
sensitivity and possibly numbness. These symptoms generally disappear in time,
but they can be permanent in a small percentage of women. There is no way to
predict who may experience this side effect of breast augmentation surgery.
Wrinkling
You may notice visible wrinkling under the skin. This is more frequent if textured
implants are used. This is a mild side effect and it generally improves or disappears
within a year.
Ruptured implants
Occasionally the fluid-filled implant may leak or even break. If a saline implant
breaks, it will deflate and the salt water in it will be harmlessly absorbed
by the body.
When a gel-filled implant leaks or breaks, one of two things can happen. Either
you will notice no change, or you may see a change in the shape or firmness
of your breast.
A broken or leaking implant generally is remedied with a replacement operation.
In some cases, it may not be possible to remove all the silicone
gel, which leaks into the breast tissue.
Mammograms
Currently, there is no evidence that indicates breast implants cause breast
cancer or prevent breast cancer. However, when you schedule your routine mammograms
after the surgery, be sure you request a technician experienced in the special
techniques needed to get a reliable x-ray of a breast with an implant.

ARE THERE OTHER PROCEDURES THAT COULD BE DONE ALONG WITH A BREAST AUGMENTATION?
If your breasts are sagging, you may want to consider a breast
lift (called a Mastoplexy) to enhance the breast augmentation.
WILL INSURANCE PAY FOR BREAST AUGMENTATION?
Breast augmentation is considered a cosmetic treatment. It is not covered by
insurance. You are responsible for full payment.
